What the event is

Seven and a half laps with 28 fixed barriers and seven water jumps. The steeplechase began as a cross-country race between church steeples and kept its obstacles when it moved to the track. It asks for the endurance of a 5000m runner, the rhythm of a hurdler and the nerve to clear a solid barrier 35 times while exhausted.

How it is run

The barriers are 0.914m high for men and 0.762m for women, and unlike sprint hurdles they do not fall over. Athletes can hurdle them or step on top and push off. The water jump is a barrier with a 3.66m pit of water on the landing side that slopes from deep to shallow, so athletes jump long to land in the shallow end.

Each full lap includes four barriers and one water jump. Athletes start from a curved line and run without lanes. Falls are common, especially at the water jump late in the race, and a stumble costs seconds rather than tenths.

Championships run heats and a final, without a semifinal. One-day meets run a straight final.

What a world-class mark looks like

Sub-8:10 for men and sub-9:05 for women is world class. The men's world record of 7:52.11 was set in 2023; the women's record of 8:44.32 has stood since 2018.

How the steeplechase scores in Heatsheet

The steeplechase fills the specialty roster slot, sharing the two-starter limit with the hurdles, combined events and race walks. Finals pay 10 down to 1. At championships, athletes who come through the heats earn the heat-advancement bonus and the final bonus but not the semifinal bonus, because there is no semifinal round.

Steeplechasers are rarely drafted early, which makes them good value. The event's specialists tend to race it exclusively, the fields are shallow compared with the flat events, and a top-three steeplechaser is a near-guaranteed podium at most Diamond League meets. The downside is the fall risk and the modest number of races per season. Full rules on the scoring page.
