What the event is

The 200m is half a lap: a full bend followed by the home straight. It rewards a different blend of qualities than the 100m. Pure acceleration matters less, and the ability to run the bend efficiently and hold top speed for a further hundred metres matters more. The best 200m runners are often the best 100m runners too, but not always, and the specialists who are not are among the most watchable athletes in the sport.

How it is run

Athletes start from blocks in a staggered formation so that everyone covers the same distance, and they stay in their lane throughout. The stagger means the outside lanes start ahead and cannot see their rivals until the straight, which is why lane draws are debated before every final. Lanes three to six are usually preferred: a gentler bend than the inside lanes, and a view of the field.

The same 2.0 metres per second wind limit as the 100m applies. Championships run heats, semifinals and a final. One-day meets run a straight final.

What a world-class mark looks like

Sub-20 seconds for men and sub-22 for women marks a world-class 200m runner. A championship podium usually needs something in the 19.7 to 19.9 range for men and 21.8 to 22.1 for women. The world records of 19.19 and 21.34 both date back years and remain among the most respected marks in athletics.

How the 200m scores in Heatsheet

The 200m sits in the sprint roster slot with the 100m and 400m, so your lineup can only start two sprinters in total. Final placings pay 10 down to 1, with advancement bonuses at championships for coming through heats and semifinals.

The 200m is where doubling pays off. Sprinters who run both the 100m and 200m at a championship, or the 200m and 400m, score in each event they contest, so one roster slot can produce two sets of points in a single week. When you are choosing between two sprinters of similar quality, the one who doubles is usually the better fantasy pick. See the full rules on the scoring page.
