Waiver-Wire Strategy: When to Drop a Specialist

The specialty roster slot covers hurdles, steeplechase, combined events, and race walks. Knowing when to drop one and stream another is where waiver leagues are won.

The waiver wire is the part of fantasy track and field that separates managers who drafted well from managers who play well. Drafts happen once. Waivers happen every week, and the specialty roster slot is where they matter most.

Why the specialty slot is different

Your lineup can start two athletes from the specialty category: hurdlers, steeplechasers, combined-event athletes and race walkers. Those events have very different calendars.

Hurdlers race often. The 100m and 110m hurdles and the 400m hurdles are on almost every Diamond League programme, and the best hurdlers run most of them. A top hurdler is a steady weekly scorer.

Steeplechasers race less often but are reliable when they do, and the event is a fixture at every championship.

Decathletes and heptathletes compete two or three times a year. Between those competitions they score nothing. Race walkers are similar: a couple of major races a season, often not on a league's schedule at all.

That difference is the whole strategy. A decathlete is a great athlete to own in a championship week and a wasted roster spot for the eight weeks either side.

When to drop a specialist

Drop a specialist when their next scoring chance is further away than the waiver period plus the next meet on your schedule. If your decathlete does not compete again for six weeks, and a steeplechaser who is running this weekend and next is on the wire, the trade-off is obvious. You can try to reclaim the decathlete before the championship; someone else might beat you to it, but the points you collect in the meantime are certain and the points you might lose are not.

Do not drop a specialist the week before a championship. That is when the round bonuses arrive, and a steeplechaser who reaches a championship final has 3 bonus points banked before the race starts.

How claims resolve

Dropped athletes sit on waivers for 24 hours before anyone can claim them, and if more than one team claims the same athlete, priority goes to the team with the fewest points. Ties are broken in favour of the team that drafted later in round one. If you are near the top of the standings you will lose most contested claims, so target athletes other managers are not watching: the steeplechaser ranked eighth in the world who is entered in three straight meets, not the one who just won.

Streaming, meet by meet

Streaming is the habit of holding a roster spot for whoever is racing this week. It works best in the specialty category because so many specialists race rarely. Each week, check the entry lists for the next scheduled meet, look for a specialist on the wire who is entered and has a history of top-eight finishes, claim them, and drop them again when their next race is a month away.

A single streamed specialist who finishes fifth every week scores 4 points a meet. Over a ten-meet season that is 40 points from a roster spot that would otherwise have held a decathlete producing 10.

Timing your claims

Rosters lock when a meet starts. Waiver claims take 24 hours to resolve, so a claim placed the day before a meet may not clear in time. Make your specialty moves at least two days before the next scheduled meet, and make them right after the previous one has been scored, when other managers are still looking at last weekend rather than next.

The short version

Hold hurdlers. Stream steeplechasers. Own decathletes for championship weeks and let them go in between. Claim early, claim quietly, and check the schedule before every move.
